Minutes of the Monthly Meeting for Business

October 15, 2006, 8:30 AM
Westtown Meeting House

Opening Announcements:

  • Bruce Harrison (filling in for Kevin Gallagher) opened Meeting for Business with a few moments of silent worship. Announcements were then read.
  • Updates as known were given on Kevin Gallagher’s father (he has returned to White Horse), Paul Zevinsky (he is at home recovering from surgery), and Cara Engle (she is recovering from surgery).
  • Copies of announcements can be found in the new black binder on the back counter by the coffee table on Sunday.
  • Nancy Bernhardt announced that the Coop has food available for purchase.

Correspondence:

  • The Baird family has transferred their membership to Westtown Monthly Meeting.
  • Deb Wood is interested in switching her membership to WMM as well.
  • The epistle meeting was mentioned in the PYM newsletter.
  • Our approved minute on the Iraq war has been sent to Concord Quarterly Meeting and is on their agenda for their next meeting.
  • Denis Aselin reported that Dotsy Bacon and John Scardina responded to his letter and requested to be placed on the Pastoral Care committee and Worship and Ministry committee respectively.
  • Peter Lane reported that it is now possible to make contributions to PYM online.

Old Business:

  • Did someone take the committee sign up list from the bulletin board?
  • Peter Lane reported that the Nominating Committee is still in need of an assistant clerk.
  • Regarding the WMM’s newsletter, Tom Haviland offered to do the electronic putting together of the newsletter and to send it out. Carrie Goodman offered to type into the computer any written announcements or other left on the desk and send to Tom. Branin Boyd offered to mail out the newsletter to anyone not having email. It was agreed that the deadline for announcements for the next newsletter will be Nov. 6th.
  • Ginny Sutton reported that the Worship and Ministry committee has successfully lined up care for the First Day School through Dec. 3rd.
  • Marc Dear reported on behalf of the Pastoral Care and Concerns committee that they met to decide meeting topics. Mitch Beaver added that they are interested in suggestions from past members of the committee.

New Business:

  • On behalf of Oak Lane Day Care, Tom Haviland requested that parents be asked to clean up after their children on Sundays so as not to leave a mess for the day care on Mondays.
  • Rebecca Mays led a brainstorming session on ways for the Meeting to nurture members spiritually.
  • Bruce Harrison commented about his concern that the new structure may be scaring some long time meeting members away. After some group discussion, it was agreed that coming to meeting is the main responsibility of being a member and that this should be communicated to members.
  • Paula Kline led a brief discussion about how we act on the Peace Testimony and how we address conflict on a daily basis. She mentioned AFSC’s program “Not one more death, not one more dollar”, as well as FCNL’s brochure about questions to ask future candidates.

Finances:

  • Branin Boyd handed out a Suggested Budget for the year 2006/2007. He explained that he adjusted the amounts to more closely match what was taken in during 2005/2006. He said that he is going to include this budget in the next newsletter.

Closing:

  • Meeting for Business closed with a few minutes of silent worship.

Respectfully submitted,

Carrie Goodman
